Terror of the Midnight Robber Review

It was the cover which drew my attention. It was rather striking with the red and black and white, and the darkly imposing figure. It felt familiar in a way, and from the first panel I knew why: There was nostalgia there. I was instantly reminded of old news paper comics I used to read as a child, of Zorro and The Phantom. When I finally met the Midnight Robber, the feeling was reinforced, not just by the stunning full page panel's forbidden tomb atmosphere like something out of Indiana Jones, but also in the design of the Robber. It was very Zorro meets Spawn meets The Phantom. The art, at times felt stiff, however the full page panels were anything but. The story is a fairly simple one: a group of friends went into the mountain forests of Trinidad for a hike and ran a foul some baddies. There was a moment of conflict which set the stage for the main character to make an appearance and the plot to develop further. It was cool hearing the local parlance, Carribean speech can be rich and expressive, varying across each country, and it's great that the reader get to experience the Trini-lingo as well as getting a taste of the culture. I felt the story to be a bit rushed. The story was skipping along at a pace from one scene to the next, which wouldn't be so bad if the actions taken by the characters didn't feel like it's what the plot requires rather than a logical or natural response. I often found myself wondering what exactly was the motivation behind certain actions and events. The action scenes were OK, I wish there was more and that it would have been choreographed a little better. When it's all said and done I enjoyed the read. I thought the story was cool especially the Midnight Robber. My curiosity is piqued as far as he is concerned. I'm left wondering about his battle, who is he going to war against? Is it soucouyah? La Diablesse? Basil? Corrupt politicians? I am looking forward to the next issue.
